One of the first and most crucial decisions to make as an aspiring bassist (bass guitar that is) is in regards to your right hand technique. Bassists have the option to “pluck,” (in an almost pizzicato type fashion) “slap,” which is usually accomplished with the thumb and index finger, or to pick with a plectrum like typical guitar style playing. It is however important to understand that each of these playing methods complement different musical genres in a better fashion than others. For instance, slapping is usually done in Funk music while picking is best suited for Punk music, so maybe it is best to first determine which style of music you would like to specialize in before you even pick up the instrument!
